January 29, 2012 (Fourth Sunday after Epiphany) Authority
Main Text: Mark 1:21-28 (Deuteronomy 18:15-20; 1 Corinthians 8:1-13)
The kingdom of heaven is near. That is the message of the gospel or good news that Jesus came to share. When you speak of a kingdom, you can’t help but speak about authority. That word authority can bring many images to mind. Some have encountered authority as controlling and depending on which side of that control you are on it can be positive or negative. Where and how have you experienced authority? Where and how have you exercised authority? In today’s Gospel reading we hear people listening to the teaching of Jesus. They had heard the authorized teachers teach but there was something different about Jesus. His teaching was not cold and distant but powerful and present. Even unclean spirits listened to him. How close is the kingdom to you? Is it distant and cold or powerful and present? What authority and impact does the kingdom have on your life?
