Lenten Theme: Here’s Your Sign!
This is the signature line of comedian Bill Engvall and suggests that certain statements and questions identify us as not the sharpest tool in the tool shed. Turning this around a little, however, we could ask the question about what identifies us a Disciples of Christ? What is our sign to the world that we not only say we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior but our lives reflect this faith through our identity. What is our sign to the world that what we believe is who we are? During the season of Lent (Which means growth), we will be developing together a “Rule of Love” for Mt. Hermon. In essence, we will be developing our sign to the world of what it means to truly be a disciple of Christ. All the buildings, programs and ministries in the world will not convey an identity reflective of the Kingdom of God. Only genuine love as evidenced through the life, death and resurrection will serve as a sign to the world. Our confession of sin identifies the sign we do not wish to convey. The “Rule of Love” will reflect the sign we seek to display in our relationship and life together. Come join us for the journey from confession of sin to confession of faith. Come join us as we develop our community sign to the world that we are Disciples of Christ.
February 22, 2012 (Ash Wednesday) Heart or Clothing
Main Text: Isaiah 58:1-12 (2 Corinthians 5:20b – 6:10; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21)
On Ash Wednesday, Christians from all over will receive ashes on their forehead as a sign. Our reading from Isaiah, however, raises an important question about this sign. Do we wear the sign if the cross like clothing or does the sign reflect the heart of who we are from the inside out? How does the sign of the cross reflect in our thoughts, words and deeds? How does the sign of the cross reflect in what we do and what we leave undone? How does the sign of the cross reflect our love of God and our neighbor? Is the sign of the cross on our forehead a sign and reflection of our heart or is it just clothing we wear on the outside? During the season of Lent we will be developing our sign to each other and the world of what rules our hearts as a community of faith and Disciples of Christ. We will be developing our “Rule of Love” at Mt. Hermon so we can say through our life together, “Here’s our sign.”
