First Sunday in Advent
This first angel visit was completely unexpected. Zechariah was performing his duty as priest when he was interrupted by an angel visitation. This angel’s first words were “Do not be afraid,” which of course he was. This angel informs Zechariah how his wife Elizabeth will become pregnant and give birth to a son. Unexpected news considering Elizabeth’s age and so Zechariah doubts this news. Since he questions the angel regarding this information, the angel tells him he will not be able to speak until this takes place. God’s news is so overwhelming at times that we doubt it. Zechariah and Elizabeth are rather unlikely candidates to play a crucial role in the fulfillment of God’s promises and yet God uses them.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations. We are a church that is deeply rooted in Scripture, Lutheran theology, and faith in the good news of Jesus Christ. All are welcome regardless of age, race, gender, life experience, complexities and questions.
The mission of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church is to inspire God's community. We are an outreach congregation who prays, worships and works together; to put into action God's Mission in the world. The history of Mt. Hermon illuminates a rich tapestry of colorful characters and extraordinary events, and was formally organized in 1881. See how our past leads to God's plan for Mt. Hermon's future.
